The highlight of the first day of the gala would be the evening "Light, sound and steam" presentation, which will be proceeded by the finale of the 'Miss World of Steam Engines' contest. All the steam locomotives that are to take part in the parade the next day will be available to be viewed closer, as well as to have a ride in the cab of a steam locomotive, which is being organised by the Friends of the Wolsztyn Steam Depot Society. The parade day will start with an increased activity in the locomotive depot from the very morning, with many special trains arriving at the station from many different directions: as many as three steam trains are planned to come from Germany this year. As usual special vintage trains will take you for a ride in time around Wolsztyn. Tickets for these trains will be available on the trains and in the locomotive shed. Please note: the number of seats available is limited! The 16th Steam Locomotive Parade itself will be officially opened at 1 o'clock p.m. The biggest steam gala in Poland will see machines from Poland, Germany, United Kingdom, Hungary, Czech Republic and Slovakia. The 'Scene on the loading ramp' will provide entertainment, contests and presentations through the day. The most interesting tourist products of all continents are presented on the world greatest tourist fair every year. There are also proposals concerning the rail journey and touring historic objects of the technique among the diverse offer of spending free time. The Wolsztyn locomotive shed presented such an offer. Apart from leading by steam engines last scheduled trains in Europe, special rides by a retro train were described on different routes of Wielkopolska. All proposals of rides include the possibility of taking advantage also of other attractions such as visiting the museum, organising the integration event on trolleys or a trip to the lake or to farm tourism belongings. During the fair it was possible to see old steam engines and coaches from Berlin, which were used by German tourists to arrive to the Parade of steam engines in Wolsztyn. A brand new narrow-gauge steam engine, which was finished in 2009, was presented too. This time, after the visit in Berlin, we are introducing photos of the front elevation part of Anhalter Bahnhof in Berlin. This station was opened on 1st July 1841. It was the north end of the line of Railways for Berlin-Anhat. The first, quite modest station was replaced by a new one – Berlin Anhaltischer Bahnhof.. It was opened by Emperor William and Chancellor Otton von Bismarck on 15th July 1880. The hall of this station was 34 meters high and about 170 meters long. It had the 62-meter span. It was for a lot of years the biggest railway station in Germany. Franz Schwechten was an architect of the new station and a designer of the hall was Heinrich Seidel who was more famous as the writer. On 3rd February 1945 the station was strongly damaged during the allied air raid on Berlin. On 17th May 1952 the station was closed, and in1960 it was blew up. Only a part of the elevation was left. There is a sports court on that place today. In 1939 an underground station of the fast railway (S-Bahn) was opened in the area of the Anhalter Bahnhof and it has been used up to now. Sat, 14 Mar 2009 00:00:00 +0100 http://parowozowniawolsztyn.pl/rss/122 Picture of the Year 2008 -chosen! http://parowozowniawolsztyn.pl/news/113 We are pleased to announce that the picture chosen to be the Picture of the Year 2008 was taken by Maciej STEHBACH, a keen enthusiast of both steam locomotives and photography. His picture showing Ol49-23 with a morning train to Poznań in the background and two stored locomotives: Pt47-106 and Ty43-123 in the foreground was chosen as the most interesting from all the pictures that were sent to the competition. The picture sums up the whole year in the Wolsztyn shed in one frame. As we all know the Wolsztyn depot is famous for its timetabled steam trains: these are represented by Ol49-23 visible in the picture departing with a timetabled train to Poznań. In 2008 much was discussed about the timetabled steam trains to be suspended and the steam services to be withdrawn from the Leszno line: these are symbolized by the two dumped locomotives in the foreground. One of the Pt47 class locomotives (Pt47-112) was the one to be used on the Leszno line until the last day of steam trains on the line, while another one (Pt47-106) was cosmetically restored during 2008. Ty43-123 was also mentioned during 2008: the Fundacja Era Parowozów started collecting money during the 15th locomotive parade in Wolsztyn for that locomotive to be restored as well. Please feel free to send your pictures that were taken in Wolsztyn as well. We will all be choosing the most interesting pictures and finally the Picture of the Year 2009, the winner will receive a unique award! At the same time we would like to invite you all to have your say about the archive pictures that were sent to us a couple of days ago. The pictures show two Ty23 locomotives - if you think you know when and where the pictures were taken let us know! Of course, not that we don't know the answers to these questions: we will let you all know in a couple of days time - so watch this space! Sat, 31 Jan 2009 00:00:00 +0100 http://parowozowniawolsztyn.pl/rss/113 The Wolsztyn steam locomotive depot museum presents – vintage pictures and model layout. http://parowozowniawolsztyn.pl/news/109 Today we would like to present two photographs that will soon enrich the Wolsztyn shed's collection of railwayana. The photographs were donated by Mr. Jacek Michalak thanks to the efforts of Mr. Włodzimierz Wolski. By presenting these pictures we would like to encourage other people to donate similar items connected to railway history that can be displayed in the shed museum as well as share any information about the pictures submitted. At the same time we are happy to infrorm, that our website will now present the railwayana collection gathered in the shed. The new section will feature a gallery showing the exhibits and memorabilia described. Our presentation will begin from the nearly 2,70m long HO (1:87) scale model layout that represents a part of the Wolsztyn station including the locomotive depot and the adjacent tacks. The track layout enables model trains to be operated with working pointwork complete with movable signal lanterns. The model layout presents the shed as it was around the year 1920, therefore the track layout as well as the appearance of some shed facilities and buildings differs from what we can see now. The model turntable is of a Prussian standard 16m diameter type new in 1901, while the one currently used is a 20m diameter one. Similarly the shed shown in the model has four roads and not eight, the shed hostel is also not there, as it was only erected in 1956. What needs to be added is that if the complete station in Wolsztyn was to be shown in miniature it would be about 14m long! The model layout would not be complete without a collection of period rolling stock displayed in display cabinets, for example a collection of goods wagons of different designs and manufacturers that were used in Poland (or on the terrains that Poland consists of now) from about 1900 to the present day. Of course the collection is still growing. In order to fully present the layout and to show its particular elements a multimedia presentation system has been devised, highlighting particular elements of the model layout with a spotlight along with a film showing the real objects that are highlighted on the layout acompanied by a video presentation. Sat, 10 Jan 2009 00:00:00 +0100 http://parowozowniawolsztyn.pl/rss/105 The return of Ol49-59 type steam engine http://parowozowniawolsztyn.pl/news/106 After more than six years an Ol49-59 type Steam Engines came back to a regular service. The machine did its last kilometers in September 2002. Nothing foreshadowed that it would come back “under steam”. Nevertheless, in March 2004 altogether with the steam engine Pt47-112 also “Oelka” was hooked and transported for repairs to Gniezno. That way, on March 17th 2004 the steam engine stood in Gniezno and waited for main repairs and firebox renovation. The firebox was from 1984 and was in such a poor state that the engine could not be operational. The firebox in a part of a boiler, which surrounds the furnace and it is exposed to the fire and, from the other side, it separates water inside the boiler. So it means that these elements are exposed to the greatest temperature changes and are replaced when used. The Ol49-59 steam engine has a boiler with four fireboxes. The firs box was build in Furnace Factory in Sosnowiec in 1952 with the number 13247. Nevertheless, the boiler and the box went to Ol49-27 steam engine type. This steam engine became a property of PKP on March 18th 1952 at DOKP Łódź in Ostrów steam shed. After 18 years of exploitation the gear box needed replacement. The steam engine was sent for general repairs to Piła. In the same time similar repairs were done on Ol49-59 type steam engine, which belonged to Ełk steam shed. The repairs lasted from 7th to 31st July and the boiler was replaced and on July 20th 1970 started its working with Ol49-59 steam engine. We know from the chronicles that the new box was welded by Franciszek Gumiński and Jan Kowalski. The steam engine came back to its Mazury steam shed and the year after that it moved to Suwałki and in 1974 to Białystok. From September 1982 it has stayed in Wolsztyn. In 1984 once again after two years of working, it underwent general repairs of the firebox, which was very worn-out and was replaced. The repairs lasted from 11th of January till 30th of April where the boiler was mended and a new firebox was fixed between 3rd of February and 22nd of March. The box was welded by ZNTK worker Kazimierz Dutkiewicz. The third box worked with the engine till 2002. The Ol49-59 steam engine was transported from Gniezno to Piła at the end of November 2005 and the new firebox was placed there. The general repairs of the whole engine lasted till the end of October 2008. Today we can still admire this type of steam engine in the regular service and how useful the engine has been since the last century testifies a fact that from the beginning of its work it did 3 126 683 kilometers. Sun, 09 Nov 2008 00:00:00 +0100 http://parowozowniawolsztyn.pl/rss/106 Tourism on railway routes in Wielkopolska http://parowozowniawolsztyn.pl/news/101 Tourist Fairs were one of parts of the International Fairs in Poznań (16th to 18th October,2008) where also this year PKP Cargo S.A. delegated one steam engine an a retro carriage from the Wolsztyn Steam Shed. Sat, 18 Oct 2008 00:00:00 +0200 http://parowozowniawolsztyn.pl/rss/101 Tr 5-65 In Budapeszt http://parowozowniawolsztyn.pl/news/94 Also this year PKP CARGO S.A. Company delegated the steam engine to VIII Steam Engine Grand Prix in the Middle Europe which took place in Hungarian Railway History Park. This time Poland was presented by one steam engine Tr5-65 series from the Wolsztyn’s shed. The way to Budapest proceeded without any problems but not without nerves. As it is known the steam engine was damaged during its way to Chabówka for the Steam Engines’ Meeting – Parowozjada. The repairs took place in Leszno and we had to set off for a long journey as soon as the repairs had been finished. We reached Budapest as we planned and straight away on Friday (12.09.2008) noon we started preparations for Saturday contest. The official opening took place at 11.00 a.m. Tr5-65 took part in the contest in the second pair with the Austrian steam engine 52 4984. Also the Hungarian steam locos 424.247 and the well known 109.109 altogether with BKV 27 were there. There were also the second Austrian steam engine 310.23, German 03 1010, Slovakian 464.001 (which we could see one week ago at Parowozjada), Slovenian 22.034 and Serbian 62-365. In the general classifications of tender steam engines Wolsztyn’s team of Tr5-65 steam engine won the second place after the Hungarians with 424.247 steam engine and before the Germans with 03 1010 steam engine. On Saturday afternoon the Polish steam engine Tr5-65 altogether with the Austrians and their 310.23 steam engine in the double traction ran the special service around Budapest. Apart from the Polish steam engine also the Polish team took a great interest presenting uniforms from different periods of time i.e., modern ones, post war times uniforms and uniforms before WW2 Wed, 17 Sep 2008 00:00:00 +0200 http://parowozowniawolsztyn.pl/rss/94 The steam engine is an inspiration for an interesting event. http://parowozowniawolsztyn.pl/news/87 We already have one festival in Wolsztyn, for which an inspiration was steam engines, an event called Steam Engines’ Miss World. On this Saturday (16.08.2008) you will have an occasion to take a part in establishing a new festival, which inspiration was not Trojan Helen or Helena Vondraćkova. It was Beautiful Helen which was an inspiration – the steam engine Pm36-2 from Wolsztyn’s Steam Shed. The Partnership Group “The Beauty of Wolsztyn’s Steam Engines” enchanted by steam engines, especially Beautiful Helen, decided to organize Helena’s Name Day. In spite of the idea of inviting the most famous Helenas, only these less famous will take part in the event. Helena Vondrackova will not come and also Beautiful Helen will not come due to a severe damage. Nevertheless there will be a lot of attractions and pretty participants. The special service called Beautiful Helen will be run by Ola i.e. the steam engine Ol49-69. The programme includes: - The First Plebiscite of Home Brewers – with a co – operation with The Maltose Extract Factory in Wolsztyn. The Plebiscite Commission will sit in the retro carriage - The performance of Wolsztyn’s Brass Band Orchestra altogether with dances for the audiences and final “100 years” song whistled by railway whistles. - bridge tournament with the participation of Bridge Club “Księgarz” from Wolsztyn - Contests and educational games organized by Wolsztyn’s Forest District - A presentation together with a trolley drive organized by Grodzisk’s Trolley Service - Sculpturing performance presented by Agrotourist Farm “ Sculpturer’s Farm” - Jacek Hałasik – Wielkopolska’s story teller, an authority of Poznań’s slang, a compere - large format name day greeting card for children - The Picnic Name Day Basket Contest for Country Ladies Circles from Wolsztyn’s and Grodzisk’s Counties - retro cars’ exhibition And many more…..
