A few words about the Wolsztyn Steam Locomotovie Depot…
The Steam Locomotive Depot in Wolsztyn is the last place in the world servicing steam engines that haul regular daily passenger trains over a mainline railway network. Maintaining the depot as an operational ‘live shed’ gives us the chance to preserve part of Poland’s vanishing railway heritage. Our biggest event is the annual Steam Locomotive Parade (at the beginning of May), which attracts several thousand tourists to Wolsztyn.
Here at the Depot you can view all the activities necessary to prepare a steam engine for running. These include: oiling, watering, coaling, as well as carrying out inspections and repairs. These have been taking place here for over a hundred years.
Moreover, you can see here: the locomotive shed, the workshop with its forge, a water tower, an ash pit, a water crane and a coal store, and our small museum.
The collection of engines includes steam locomotives of various classes, among which the most interesting are: the oldest, TKb-b4 – a fireless steam locomotive from 1912, which appeared in the movie The Pianist; Ok1-359 – from 1917; Ty1-76 – a three-cylinder loco from 1919; Tr5-65 – from 1921, the only surviving example of its class in the world; Ok22-31 – from 1929, the oldest Polish produced loco; and Pm36-2 Beautiful Helena – constructed in 1937, the fastest Polish-built loco, capable of running at 130 km/h. A sister locomotive won a gold medal at the World Exhibition in Paris.
The three operational engines are an express locomotive, Pt47-65, and two passenger locos, Ol49-59 and Ol49-69.
Today, the Wolsztyn Locomotive Depot is a Cultural Institute of the Province of Wielkopolska. It is managed by a partnership formed in 2016 by Wielkopolska Province, Wolsztyn Town Council, Wolsztyn District Council and PKP Cargo S.A.

Then you can see the most important things – workshops are working, mechanics inspect and repair steam engines all the time so you can know the technical aspects of using steam locomotives.
When the steam locomotive returns to the Depot after it finished work with regular daily passenger trains.

After 5-10 minutes from the steam train entrance to the station in Wolsztyn, the steam locomotive goes down to the Depot – then you can see extremely rare, traditional preparing the steam engine for driving (ash cleaning, coal and water replenishment).

The train departs from the Wolsztyn station (800 m form the Depot). It’s not possible to take passengers from the Depot.
Where to buy a train ticket?
Tickets can be bought at the railway station, online or from the train conductor. Parowozownia Wolsztyn DO NOT sell the train tickets.

Das Bahnbetriebswerk Wolsztyn
Das Bahnbetriebswerk Wolsztyn, das Sie gleich besuchen werden, ist das letze Bahnbetriebswerk der Welt, wo die normalspurige Dampflokomotiven jeden Tag mit Personenzügen eingesetzt werden. Das aktive Bahnbetriebswerk mit seinen Dampflokomitiven ist eine große Chance das Eisenbahnerbe Polens zu retten. Die größte Veranstaltung ist die alljährliche Dampflokparade, die Ende April bzw. Anfang Mai stattfindet und Tausende von Touristen nach Wolsztyn lockt.
Hier im Bahnbetriebswerk können Sie die täglichen Tätigkeiten beobachten, die Dampflok auf ihren Einsatz vorbereiten und hier seit über hundert Jahren durchgefuhrt werden. Es geht hier a.u. um Wasserfassen, Bekohlen, Schmieren oder um die Untersuchungen bzw. um kleine Reparaturen. Sie können hier den Lokschuppen, die Werkstatt mit einer Schmiede, den Wasserturm, den Ausschlackkanal mit Wasserkran, das Kohlenlager sowie eine Ausstellung bewundern.
Hier in Wolsztyn gibt es ca. 20 Dampflokomotiven der verschiedenen Baureihen. Es sind die älteste feuerlose Dampflok TKb b4 von 1912, die Ok1-359 von 1917, die Sie in dem Spielfilm “Der Pianist” sehen können, die Dreizylinder-Dampflok Ty1-76 von 1919, die einzig noch vorhandene Dampflok Tr5-65 von 1921 und die älteste polnische Dampflok Ok22-31 von 1929. Dazu gehört auch die schnellste Dampflok mir ihrer Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 130 km/h, die Pm36-2 genannt “Schöne Helena” von 1937, deren Schwesterdampflok in Paris mit einer Goldmedalie ausgezeichnet wurde. Betriebsfähig sind drei Dampflokomotiven: die Schnellzugdampflok Pt47-65 sowie zwei Personenzuglokomotiven der Baureihe Ol49 mit den Nummern 59 und 69. Heutzutage wirkt das Bahnbetriebswerk Wolsztyn als eine Kultureinrichtung, die im Jahre 2016 von der Woiwodschaft Wielkopolska, der Gemeinde Wolsztyn, dem Landkreis Wolsztyn und von der PKP CARGO SA. gegründet worden ist. Der Eintritt auf das Bahnbetriebswerk ist gebührenpflichtig. Hier gilt die Besichtigungsordnung.
